One party rule in China --- advantages & disadvantages
Sunday, 9 March 2014 | 08:49 | 0 comments

Brief intro to one party rule:
A single-party state, one-party state, one-party system or single-party system is a type of state in which a single political party has the right to form the government, usually based on the existing constitution. All other parties are either outlawed or allowed to take only a limited and controlled participation in elections. Sometimes the term de facto single-party state is used to describe a dominant-party system that, unlike the single-party state, allows democratic multiparty elections, but the existing practices or balance of political power effectively prevent the opposition from winning the elections.

Advantages:
-No time will wasted on illegal politics and campaigns, the time can be better spent on running the country.
-Allows more unity in / with the government
-Less political posturing in government, and a high level of satisfaction with civilian members of that political party.
-High efficiency, and promptly effective reaction to emerging challenges and opportunities, especially in response to sudden and catastrophic accidents.
-Effective containment of corruption in the social transition period.
-More responsible government. In democratic societies, many officials are elected with fixed terms, and they then will not fall out of power before the expiration unless they break the law or make wrong decisions or take no action. Once their terms expire, they will not be blamed for any problem. In China, however, the Principal Officials Accountability System is gradually improved and officials must be responsible for their incompetence, negligence of duty or mistakes at any time
-Personnel training and selecting system and avoiding the waste of talented people
-Can truly represent the whole people

Disadvantages:
-Lack of representation in the country, voices of people opposing to the government's stand will not be heard, it will not be considered.
-No one to counter-argue the decisions, and therefore no reason to validate the choices of the ruling party.
-Lack of voice for opposing political parties, and a lack of balance in laws, especially those governing civil rights

One party system in china to blame for its poor human rights records
Campaigners who oppose the desicioms of the ruling party face systematic repression ranging from police monitoring to detention, arrest, enforced disappearance, and torture. Here are some examples of the stories of the campaigners:

-The government continues to impose indefinite house arrest on its critics. Liu Xia, the wife of imprisoned Nobel Peace Laureate Liu Xiaobo, has been missing since December 2010 and is believed to be under house arrest to prevent her from campaigning on her husband’s behalf. In February 2011 she said in a brief online exchange that she and her family were like “hostages” and that she felt “miserable.” She is allowed to visit Liu Xiaobo once a month, subject to agreement from the prison authorities.

-Chen Guangcheng, a blind legal activist who was released from prison in September 2010, remained under house arrest in 2011. Security personnel assaulted Chen and his wife in February after he released footage documenting his family’s house arrest. Noted activist Hu Jia, who was released after completing a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence in June, is also under house arrest in Beijing, the capital, with his activist wife Zeng Jinyan and their daughter. Grave concerns exist about the fate of lawyer Gao Zhisheng, who was “disappeared” by the authorities in September 2009 and briefly surfaced in March 2010 detailing severe and continuous torture against him, before going missing again that April.

Why do you think china has been able to progress with the one party system?
People in the past were probably open minded about things, they wererobably not so  particular about the way things are done. They simply enjoyed the way of life, they do not feel a need to voice out their opinions, as they would land in great harm by doing so, they will get oppressed by the authorities. Thus, the people in the past were either open-minded about life, or they were oppressed by the ruling party while attempting to voice their opinions. This made things easy and efficient to settle, enabling the fast paced progress in China.

Do you think that maintaining a one party system will continue to benefit in china?
No, I don't think so. Nowadays, people all around the world have freedom of speech, it is nearly impossible for the ruling party to oppress people now, as the number of people opposing the decision of the single party is increasing. There must be a change in the political system, it is essential that there be an increment in political systems in china such that the voices, the desperate pleas from the Chinese public be heard and considered, it would act as a greater good for the majority of Chinese in china. With more political systems in china, the people's opinions can finally be heard, chona's society would be a better, a warmer, a much more condusive place for the Chinese civilians to live in. Therefore, if the one party system continues in china, the country would never flourish, it would never progress well with the full support of its people.

Do you think China's one party system is similar to Singapore's?
No, I don't think so. China's one party system is so strict, whereas Singapore's is much lenient, everyone in Singapore has a freedom of speech, he has the right to voice out any opinion he has to benefit the people, the welfare of the people is not entirely laid in the palms of the government. As china has a much larger population of people as compared to Singapore's, the government in china cannot afford to have too many objections and opposes from it's people, so the one party rule is much stricter there. Singapore is a small country, the population of people in our country is not as large, the government is able to handle the opinions of the people and make the right choices. Thus, China's one party system differs from Singapore's.
What can both countries learn and not to learn from each other in terms of governance?
China could learn from Singapore's way of ruling, china should allow people to voice out their opinions, or come up with an opposition party to argue both sides of a situation. By doing this, the people in china could look at both stands and support whichever they deem right and agree with. Singapore's one party rule could be a little more stricter as some people tend to voice out their opinions openly, without a care in the world if his remarks would agitate or spark anger in others. Racist remarks and discriminative actions could be prevented in our country if the rule in Singapore was made slightly stricter.
